Campaign question

I was running through the campaign again over the weekend, and had an interesting issue pop up. I was in Act 2, and had purchased a bunch of packs at the start of the chapter. I pulled on Farin - who also shows up later in the chapter.
However, after defeating Reya, and starting the next part of the chapter, Farrin was gone.
I understand the story, Alen tells Farin to take care of Darius, so you lose both of those characters, but given that I had opened him earlier in a pack, should I still lose him as a playable card later on in the chapter?
I'm pretty sure this also happens in chapter one, if you open an Ulthur but then decide to go with Rob, you lose both the Story ulthur and any that you opened previously (or vice versa).
Just wondering if this is intentional or not?
